COMPANY CHAPLAIN

As Captain of the 4th Ashton, I am pleased to announce the appointment of our new Company Chaplain, the Reverend Alan Wickens. As well as gaining a new Chaplain for our company, we gained a new member in the form of Alan's Son James. We welcome them both warmly into our numbers and look forward to the future.

CAMP 2003 HAYLING ISLAND

This year our week was a lot wetter than in the past but that didn't prevent us from having a great time. We took a lot more boys this year and even managed two tents instead of one. Tent inspection went to the 50th Manchester this year much to the annoyance of Rob Gibson who worked his socks off to win. Never mind Rob but you can take some consolation that our first year campers actually won the inspection on one of the days, which in itself is a minor miracle.

One point that I feel I must mention is the fact that once again the OFFICERS WON the annual O v B football match with a very convincing 3-2 scoreline. Man of the match for the third year running in my view was the Officers Goalie, a former Man City pro with endless talent.

JUNIOR SECTION 5 A SIDE FOOTBALL

Our Junior Section got through to the semi finals of the Battalion 5 a side tournament this year, eventually being beaten by the  tournament winners. We won our group by winning four games from four with an impressive +25 goal difference. See some of the pictures in our FOOTBALL GALLERY

Well done to everyone who played in the team you did us proud!

Thanks also to Ronnie and Christine Claire for their help and sponsorship with our new football strip.

DISPLAY 2003

Our Display was held on Tuesday 24th June this year and was one of the best yet. The lads looked very impressive and performed their items with precision. The Band were absolutely fantastic and lots of awards and trophies were presented, even a Presidents Badge! Many of the boys parents came up to me afterwards, some in tears, to say how wonderful the night had been. This made all the hard work that we had put in all the more worthwhile. A very big thank you to the boys, parents and all our friends for your support.

CAMP 2003

At the end of July we are spending our annual summer camp at Hayling Island. We are taking nine boys and one Officer (Me). It will be the first camp for five of the boys and they are all looking forward to the experience, although some of the older boys are telling a few tall stories about what to expect. Keep your eyes open here for the report on our return.

DISPLAY

Our Annual Display and Awards Evening will take place on Tuesday 24th June and everyone is invited to attend. There will be several items from all sections and our band "The Anchormen" will perform a medley of tunes for you. Inspecting Officer will be Mr Derek Whitehead accompanied by his wife Irene and Guest of Honour to present the awards is Mr Albert Warren.

FUNDRAISERS

A hectic day packing bags at the local supermarket provided a much needed £425 which will be used to help keep things running smoothly for another year. Many thanks to the staff at Morrisons in Dukinfield for their support and to all the boys, staff and parents who came along to help.

A coffee day at the town hall recently swelled the coffers by a further £200. Once again many thanks to all those who helped.

CHANGE OF CAPTAIN

Following the recent retirement of Denise Pinder we have appointed Stephen Bennett as Captain of the 4th.

CAMP 2002

This year our annual camp was held at Swanage, Dorset where we were joined by the 1st Denton and the 50th manchester Companies. The weather stayed glorious all week and a fantastic time was had by all.  For the second year running the 4th Ashton were victorious in the tent inspection competition but only by the narrowest of margins, with the boys from 50th Manchester giving us a good run for our money. The usual fun was had during all the activities but the highlight of the week was the Officers v Boys football match. The Officers at last managed a win in this traditional camp contest scoring an impressive 5 to the boys rather lack-lustre 4. The game was charged with emotion as this was the first  O v B match since the recent death of our chaplain and referee Rev. Norman Riley. It was perhaps fitting that the Norman Riley trophy should at last go to the Officers, and I feel sure that Norman was watching from above with a huge grin on his face.

We all look forward to next years camp at Hayling Island. Can we hold on to our trophies?.....  Who knows??
